An object at rest, just like this cat, has a zero velocity as it is not moving. We can specify his position with respect to a coordinate axis as positive or negative. This depends whether it is located to the right or to the left of the origin.
The swimming dogs are in motion and therefore they have speed. Speed indicates how fast the dogs are moving. One of the dogs is swimming faster to the right, because we have specified its direction we can say that the dog has a velocity in the positive direction while the other dog is leaping in the negative direction, or to the left.
The units of velocity are: meters per second. We are dividing units of distance by units of time.
Motion can also happen in two-dimensions! This motorcycle has a Vertical Velocity and a Horizontal Velocity. The horizonatl velocity is constant and the vertical velocity varies directly with the acceleration due to gravity.
